An element of her crafted persona, Kahlo’s hair was a site of self-transformation, a component of her self-presentation, and a subject in her art. This was painted shortly after she cut her hair in the wake of her divorce from Diego Rivera—the newly shorn strands escape haphazardly from the ribbon. As Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving comes to a close, this work is a subtle but potent reminder of the multifaceted ways in which Kahlo’s life experiences visibly informed her identity, appearance, and artwork, as well as her public perception.
