In 2000, acclaimed stage director and theater artist Robert Wilson (@bob___wilson) worked with composer Michael Galasso and lighting designer A. J. Weissbard to formulate a kaleidoscopic design for the Guggenheim's Giorgio Armani retrospective. Galasso's original score set the stage for the visitor experience, marking the first sound installation ever mounted at the museum. The synergy between the lighting, sound, and exhibition design created a theatrical context for the more than 400 garments on view. The design was unified by a luminous translucent scrim that lined the interior of the rotunda's central void and partially obscured the view from the ramps, creating an aura of mystique.

Since opening in 1959, our Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum has served as inspiration for invention, challenging artists and architects to react to its eccentric, organic design. Follow #Guggenheim60 to discover more artist interventions during our 60th anniversary year!
