#WorkoftheWeek: Marlow Moss, White and Yellow 1935.

Marlow Moss believed in the idea of perpetual becoming — the responsibility to perpetually create one’s own existence through action. Moss changed her name from Marjorie to Marlow in 1919 and adopted a masculine appearance, with short hair and tailored suits. A radical modernist artist and Jewish lesbian, Moss had to leave Paris in 1939 at the beginning of World War II, when most of her work was destroyed. She moved to Cornwall where she stayed for the rest of her life. In 1955, three years before her death, she said: ‘Art is – as life – forever in the state of becoming.’ Moss's work had a big impact on her peer and collaborator Piet Mondrian, who credited Moss as the inventor of the 'double line', as seen in this work. The two artists' works are displayed side-by-side @tatestives.
