Painted in the high summer of 1885, Claude Monet’s La Prairie Fleurie is one of the finest expressions of the rural French countryside that the artist committed to canvas during the 1880s. The rich painting is lavished with all of the hallmarks of a great Impressionist work – its vivid color palette, mix of natural elements and interplay of light and shadow – and was executed during a period when the diverse landscape surrounding Monet’s new home in Giverny became his primary motif.
