These rare books and manuscripts are just a handful of some 600 volumes, lost in the aftermath of the Second World War, which were officially returned to The University and Regional Library of Bonn yesterday after 70 years. This is the most significant return of lost books in the 200-year history of the University Library, and one of the largest singular returns of items lost in the War or the post-war period.

In 2017, a large collection of books were offered to Sotheby’s for sale from a Belgian library. However, when they arrived at Sotheby’s in London, specialists from our Books department quickly noticed that many of the books had had their library stamps expunged, their bindings removed, or their title pages destroyed. It was clear that, in the past, attempts had been made to conceal the origins of the collection. Using the unique medieval manuscripts as a starting point, Sotheby’s research revealed that they matched those listed on ULB’s Inventory of Losses and helped facilitate their return.

How exactly the books and manuscripts found their way to Belgium is not known, however it is possible that they were taken by Belgian soldiers in the years immediately after the end of the war. According to estimates, the Bonn University and State Library lost up to 180,000 volumes during the Second World War. •
