Our annual Orientalist Sale opens with a superb and rare group of watercolours by 19th-century British artist David Roberts which have remained in the same distinguished private collection since they were acquired in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Roberts had long held a desire to travel to the ‘east’ and in 1838 he embarked on an eleventh month tour, returning to Britain with a portfolio of 272 drawings that he felt was ‘one of the richest… that ever left the East.’ Disembarking at Alexandria, he moved south to Cairo, chartered a boat up the Nile – the first professional British artist, travelling independently, to undertake this journey – set off into the desert, before reaching Suez and the Red Sea, crossed the Sinai desert to Petra, headed north to Jerusalem, to the great ruins of Baalbek and, finally, to Beirut. The body of work he produced forever sealed his reputation not only as an intrepid traveller but also as an artist of extraordinary talent.

The group of 15 watercolours includes ‘Approach of the Simoon, Desert of Gizeh [Giza]’, ‘Front Elevation of the Great Temple of Aboo-Simbel [Abu Simbel], Nubia’ and ‘Site of the Temple, Jerusalem’, probably executed 'on-the-spot'.
