Robert Mapplethorpe's black and white photography was known for its controversial subject-matter. As well as self-portraits such as this one, Mapplethorpe's works often feature celebrities such as Andy Warhol and Patti Smith. His most controversial work features the BDSM subculture of the late 1960s, which sparked a national debate over the public funding of controversial artwork at the time.
