Dizzy Gillespie’s influence over jazz music will make you, well, dizzy. The trumpet player and band leader rose to fame during the swing era, but he went on to help found bebop and Afro-Cuban jazz.
He was a memorable figure on stage: he played on a signature bent trumpet and he could puff up his cheeks with significant amounts of air.
