Zitkála-Šá was an accomplished author, musician, composer, and dedicated worker for the reform of United States Indian policies.
A Yankton Sioux woman, she was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, the daughter of a Native American mother and a white father. She was educated at reservation schools, the Carlisle Indian School, Earlham College in Indiana, and the Boston Conservatory of Music.
As she pursued her education outside the reservation, Zitkála-Šá was increasingly troubled by pressures to disassociate herself from her heritage, she compiled an anthology of Native American lore, published in 1901. Zitkála-Šá founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926, which worked to make U.S. government policies toward Native Americans more just.
Photographer Gertrude Käsebier photographed Zitkála-Šá in tribal dress and western clothing, identifying the two worlds in which this woman lived and worked. In many of the images, Zitkala Sa holds her violin or a book, symbolizing her work and interests.
