Upon observing the quantity and diversity of all the different types of sound objects that were sold around Canal Street, I thought of making a work with radios. There were eleven years of notes before I finally realised the work in 2001, in Helsinki, at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. Radios are interesting because they are physically similar and at the same time each radio is unique.' - Cildo Meireles ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📻📻📻 The radios that make up Meireles’ Babel 2001 compete with each other to create a cacophony of continuous sound – voices, music and inaccessible murmurings. Listen to the artist’s ‘tower of incomprehension’ at Friday’s Uniqlo Tate Lates, as part of an evening that explores international art and creativity. This month’s programme includes poetry readings in the Terrace shop, a human language exchange – free language taster sessions from talented multi-linguists – zine and collage making with Yellowzine, and DJ sets in the Turbine Hall.
