Gillian Wearing's work explores how the public and private identities of ordinary people are self-fashioned and documented. For this photographic series, the artist stood on a busy South London street and asked passers-by to write down what was on their mind. She has written that this collaboration 'interrupts the logic of photo-documentary and snapshot photography by the subjects' clear collusion and engineering of their own representation.'

The series is called 'Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You To Say’ and brought Wearing international recognition when it was first exhibited in 1993. The complete series includes over fifty colour photographs — four of which can be seen on free display at Tate Britain.

Gillian Wearing CBE, 'Everything is connected in life...'; 'I have been certified as mildly insane!'; 'I'm desperate' and 'I like to be in the country' / 'The last holiday abroad was nice but I can't afford it', 1992-3.
