Talking Art, a morning of making and talking designed for sight impaired visitors and friends, has been running at @tatestives for 18 years. The sessions combine practical making activities with detailed spoken descriptions of artworks, led by Tate's trained specialists.

Harry Carter has been a Talking Art regular. He's a retired teacher who paints and writes poetry. Harry is visually impaired, and after a morning session at the Barbara Hepworth Museum he wrote the following poem, entitled 'Hepworth Guides a Blind Man round her Garden'.

Because I could not see, they let me hold her hand -
a lost-wax cast, in bronze, that others only saw -
strong veined, gnarled, with sinews
that could speak of bronze and elm and stone.

Outside in the garden, my hand was pushed
through space where stone had been
before she saw vitality was trapped and let light in.
I felt the warm sun streaming through the gap.

This, and the cold cast shadow of the block,
reminded me of rituals long ago
when people trembled as they passed through rock-
neglected thoughts till Hepworth broke the rule,
released the rocky soul
and made the lesser greater than the whole.
