#ArtWords: Surrealism is a 20th century movement that explored the workings of the mind – championing the irrational, the poetic and the revolutionary. 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' was painted while Tanning was staying with her companion, the artist Max Ernst, in Sedona, Arizona. Tanning recalls how Mozart was a favourite topic of conversation at that time, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is titled after one of his most well-known serenades. By the door of the ranch Tanning planted some sunflower seeds and she became fascinated with these plants. She sees the sunflower in her painting as ‘a symbol of all the things that youth has to face and to deal with.' ? Tanning continually pushed the boundaries of surrealism, wanting to depict ‘unknown but knowable states’, to suggest there was more to life than meets the eye.
