Photo by @amivitale | Ruth Lekgpanai is the first woman in Africa who is a "giraffe guard" for the Twiga Walinzi, a brilliant team that works as field researchers and protectors of endangered reticulated giraffe in northern Kenya. Giraffe are undergoing what has been referred to as a silent extinction. Current estimates reveal that populations across Africa have dropped 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from approximately 155,000 in the late 1980s to under 100,000 today. She and her team are on the front lines of protecting these beautiful animals, gathering more information on giraffe populations and developing a photo identification database to track individual giraffes. They manage a network of 120 camera traps and conduct snare removal patrols.
