When what feels so right is in fact the thing that will cause you pain and suffering, what to do? There is so much inertia around our past that the sheer weight of it hangs around like train tracks driving us in the same direction over and over again. We are told by to trust our bliss, to follow what feels right and be our own guru. But, that only works to the extent that you are able to align yourself and act with your true and highest nature. When you tune in and think you feel the “truth” but in fact just feel the chains of the past, then what follows is suffering. You may heroically claim that to chart new territory and appear bold and daring when in fact it’s the same repetitive cycle on repeat. _ Yoga is a promise of true freedom. It starts with truthfulness. You cannot break free of chains you don’t know are there. One of the revelatory facts about working with the body in yoga is that old patterns often manifest in body posture so that what feels natural and normal is not in fact what is most healthy. So many yoga students resist changing alignment patterns because what they do “feels good”. But using your own feelings exclusively as a barometer for what direction to walk on the path can be misleading. For example, take the difference between short term pleasure and long term pain or short term pain and long term pleasure. The ability to delay gratification and see the bigger picture is a sign of emotional maturity. _ Chaturanga Dandasana is one of the hardest poses in the whole yoga practice. It’s an arm balance, a core strength pose, an exercise of mental disincline. And it is also a pose that not many people can do with health alignment. It took me a good five years to set my shoulders properly and I still work on keeping the pelvis in a tucked position. But, this pose is so much a part of the journey that it is worth putting in the work to understand the mechanics. I am all for modifying and building strength. I am not for forcing it or holding a pattern of alignment that feels natural but is in fact unhealthy. _ Day 1 #ashtangabasicschallenge @omstarsofficial Link in bio to sign up.
