Have you checked out our newest online feature about the materials and techniques used to create #prints? Through animated images and illustrative works from the @MetDrawingsAndPrints collection, we walk you through the earliest employed techniques of woodcut, engraving, and etching, as well as more recent methods like lithography and screenprinting.⁣

Today we’re highlighting #engraving! Engraving is a printmaking process in which lines are cut into a copper or zinc plate in order to hold the ink. The printmaker incises or cuts a composition directly into the surface using a sharp tool, known as a burin. Ink is then gently spread across the whole face of the plate. After the plate is wiped to the desired level, it is ready for printing. In most cases, the plate is run through a special press equipped with rollers. The resulting impression on paper displays a reverse image of the original engraved composition. ➡️ Swipe to watch #MetDrawingsAndPrints’ Collections Specialist Liz Zanis create her own engraving…and then visit met.org/2RvDiCL to see more!⁣

This project was made possible by the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies (@lncps) at Columbia University.⁣
