Prisoners Exercising is a painting by Vincent van Gogh, inspired by a print of Newgate Prison in London — an image that stayed with the artist for many years. The painting shows the misery and entrapment of the prisoners, while their superiors watch on.

Having grown up in a middle-class home, Van Gogh was surprised by the poverty on the streets of London. When deciding to become an artist, he wished only to create art ‘for the people’. Van Gogh never profited from his paintings during his lifetime, living in poverty for the majority of his life.
