#ArtWords: Adopted by Paul Gauguin in the 1880s, 'synthetism' is characterised by flat areas of colour and bold outlines. Rather than a naturalistic representation of reality, the aim of synthetism was instead to combine (or synthesise) three elements: the subject-matter, the artist’s feelings about the subject and aesthetic concerns of colour, line and form.
