@scott_kranz here with some more Leave No Trace advice for your winter backcountry adventures.
Believe it or not, some of my favorite camping experiences have been in the depths of winter! The beauty and solitude snow camping provides cannot be beat. As in summer, always camp on durable surfaces. In winter, this generally means camping right on the snow. Where on the snow exactly? Be sure to avoid avalanche terrain, cornices, and unstable snow. Also, it's best to camp at least 200 feet away from lakes, rivers, and streams. And before you leave your camp, “naturalize” the area. In other words, tear down and smooth out any snow pits, shelters, or wind breaks you created.
