Sable Elyse Smith (@sable_elyse) creates work that lays bare the long-term impact of the prison industrial complex and surveillance culture on both individuals and communities. Works from the “Coloring Book” series appropriate pages from a book distributed to kids whose parents are being processed through the Family Court system, which the artist then enlarges, draws and colors upon with thick oil stick markings. While the book is meant to bring comfort, there are also sinister undertones. On this page, children must identify things that don’t belong in the image; this phrasing, however, implies that the children and their families, by contrast, do belong in court system. #BlackHistoryMonth
