In the summer of 1984, a crimson plantlike form sprouted from the top of Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic building, trailing translucent tentacles into the New York City sky. The inflatable sculpture by Otto Piene was a prelude to a unique performance “SkyDance/SkyTime,” conceived by Piene, choreographer Elaine Summers, and composer Carman Moore. Created specifically for the museum's rotunda, this multimedia spectacle incorporated dance, live music, film projections, and inflatable sculptures.
