Starting next year, every new home built in California will have something extra on top.
Thanks to a new state mandate, all newly constructed homes in CA must have solar panels in 2020. That will add $8,000 to $10,000 to the cost of a home.
California estimates that these costs to new homeowners will be offset by savings on utility bills. But one expert told CNBC that the added costs could hit “the affordable side of the market.”
“It’s already difficult for builders to build, and I think this is just going to exacerbate that problem.”
