In the remnants of wildfire-scarred homes and burned-out cars, an artist is paying tribute to the town of Paradise, California, which was devastated by last summer’s Camp Fire. The artist, Shane Grammer, grew up near Paradise and said the idea for the project formed after he saw images of the devastation on Facebook. One Paradise resident, Suzy Drews, asked Grammer if he would create a portrait of her mother, who died in the blaze. Drews recalled being speechless when she saw the portrait: “He captured the essence of my mom — the wonderment, the innocence.” (?: Terrence Duffy)
