The farmer who snapped these photos suspected that the ethereal phenomenon occurred because it was cold enough that the ice encasing the fruit remained frozen, but warm enough that the apple inside turned to complete mush. “When I pruned a tree it would be shaken in the process, and the mush would slip out of the bottom of the ‘ghost apple.’” (?: Andrew Sietsema)
