This newly formed island in the South Pacific has left the scientists who discovered it scratching their heads. “It’s very sticky,” said one scientist. “I’m still a little baffled of where it’s coming from. Because it’s not ash.” The island, which is covered in vegetation and a mysterious mud, was formed by volcanic eruption in 2014. Scientists initially predicted it would be around for just a few months, but a NASA study released in 2017 found that the island survived “against all odds” and could last from six to 30 years.
