With a significant decrease in high-value fish in the area, it can be difficult to get a fair day’s catch. However, with an annual two-month-long fishing ban in place by the government of Tamil Nadu, the waters are, for a short period of time, free of mechanized trawlers. This may allow fish stocks to recover enough so that fishermen can return to their humble boats, in hopes of catching more than a handful of fish a day. Overfishing, pollution, and climate change have all diminished fish stocks upon which these men depend.
