#WorkoftheWeek: Gilbert & George's 'Existers' 1984 consists of 28 individually framed photos arranged to produce a single image. The artists’ aim was to counter the negative stereotypes commonly applied to young men that cast them as loutish and uncultured.
George explained that the art world ‘couldn’t handle works of modern art showing young people from neighbourhoods where they themselves didn’t want to live, where they wouldn’t even choose to go.’ Instead, Gilbert & George adopt similar poses to the youths, implying that the artists occupy the same social standing as their models.
