Nue couchée (translated as ‘Reclining nude’) 1969-70, is one of a small group of soft sculptures made by #DorotheaTanning that evoke the female body. Her sculptures were three-dimensional expressions of the fantastical images and narratives of her paintings. Here the rounded forms, the suggestion of vertebrae (made by table tennis balls inside the sculpture), and the limb-like extrusions, evoke a nude of surprising vitality and sensuality.

Tanning’s fabric nudes will go in display at Tate Modern alongside her enigmatic paintings in the first major UK exhibition of the artist’s work since her death in 2012, at 101 years old. Exhibition opens 27 February.
