Neel’s 1973 painting, ‘Kitty Pearson’, is an example of the artist’s signature style: bright, large-scale portraits defined by a thick black or blue contour line. The physical 'imperfections' of the sitters' bodies are highlighted rather than glossed over and her portraits are bold, unsentimental and self-assured. Neel's frank depictions of the female nude have been seen to generate 'a compelling portrayal of feminine experience.' (Denise Bauer)
