Imagine this: It’s 2019. You walk past your neighborhood pharmacy, your deli, the local pet store and then BAM. There’s a cannabis store. And it’s just as legal as the pet store.

Kevin Murphy, the chief executive of Acreage Holdings, a U.S. based cannabis firm, believes that scenario is possible through the STATES Act.

The STATES Act is a piece of bipartisan legislation that would allow cannabis businesses to operate legitimately and give them access to bank accounts, even allowing them to be listed on U.S. stock exchanges.

The legislation could pass this year, positioning the U.S. to compete with countries that have already legalized recreational weed.
