Daniel Richards, a soybean farmer in Louisiana, is now forced to watch his soybeans rot in his 250-acre field.

Louisiana’s ports handle a great deal of agricultural exports nationally, including products from Iowa and Missouri. The port also handles 60% of export grain from the Midwest. But the ports in Louisiana are no longer handling as much cargo – exports were down 14% in 2018 compared to 2017, mostly from agricultural products.

Daniel Richards has been feeling these effects. “We’ve been through tough times,” the fourth-generation Louisiana grain farmer said, “but definitely nothing of this magnitude.” In total, about 800 acres, 40% of his crop, sit dried out and useless. China would typically buy a little over 50% of his soybeans.
