#DreadScott has described his artistic practice as “revolutionary art to propel history forward.” Here we see the artist in a performance where he struggled to stand before an open fire hose, in a fierce reminder that such hoses were used against peaceful protesters in Alabama in the 1963 Birmingham campaign, organized by #MartinLutherKingJr and other activists. The 2016 performance also featured a “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture more recently adopted by advocates against racism and police violence. Scott’s work represents the similarities between the Civil Rights Movement and current movements like Black Lives Matter. #HalfthePictureBKM #MLKJrDay⠀
