The polemic surrounding harvesting billfish is a little confusing, in my opinion. Especially considering that sport fishing (with a conservative 15% mortality rate) is well accepted. Marlin is consumed worldwide as part of our seafood consumption habits. Why is it that our “small batch” harvesting methods cause such outrage? A marlin of this size is between about 6 and 8 years old and has been breeding since it was 2 years old. By comparison, a black grouper reaches sexual maturity at about 5-6 years old with an average weight between 40-50 lbs, yet those are frequently harvested way smaller. The point being: my harvesting this Marlin is not having negative effects on the ecosystem, yet it will be much maligned. There is no issue with standing for something we believe in, but we need to do so with facts in hand and without hypocrisy. If you order swordfish at the restaurant and are against harvesting a marlin, it is contrary behavior. Same if you “catch and release” them after taking a photo. For a spearfisherman, a marlin is a once in a lifetime fish, an amazing accomplishment, and we truly are grateful and respectful for that catch. If this line of thinking stays like that, it is ok (we harvest about 5 a year around the world). It is time to ask ourselves the right questions and find common solutions, instead of blindly pointing fingers and passing the blame. Let’s make a difference. Let’s spend time researching and then present strong fact-based opinion to create positive change. @neptonics_worldwide @spearfishing_reviews @spearchannel @joerogan #harvestsmartly #getfacts #discussions #builtthefuture
