Sasha, 9, is so extremely shy. She wouldn’t lift up her head or make eye contact. Then the next day we saw her on the school bus and she waved at me and smiled. She opened up and we spoke here at her family home after school. She is very close to the contact line, which divides the government and non-government controlled areas in eastern #Ukraine.

“The bus is a big problem. Going to school and back is really hard,” explained her grandma Iryna. The journey is dangerous: the school bus drives close to the contact line and is in shelling range for much of its journey. Studying at home is also hard for Sasha. “The windows shattered [during the shelling] so we covered them up and now it’s too dark for Sasha to do her homework in the house.”

Sasha is nervous about going to school. She prefers staying at home with her mum and her six pet kittens. “I like to watch cartoons on TV,” she said, as well as playing hide and seek with her friends. Before, when she heard the sounds of fighting she would cover her ears with her hands. Now, Sasha says she is not scared of the fighting and neither are her kittens. #ChildrenUnderAttack
