Dutch artist Isaac Israels held an enduring fascination with Indonesia, and in 1921-22 he made the five-week-long journey by ship to the Far East. He landed in Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) and stayed in the region for nearly a year. This painting of a Javanese dancer is set within a pavilion structure built on columns and open on all sides. With arrows on her back and elaborate headgear, the dancer takes centre stage while gamelan musicians are seated behind her, onlookers watching from the verdant tropical surroundings beyond. Four paintings by the artist are currently on view in our #London galleries, ahead of this Thursday’s inaugural Art of Travel & Exploration sale.
