Then bring what you saw in the dark into the light, so that it may have an effect on others, shining inwards from outside.” – Caspar David Friedrich. The father of German Romanticism was a great observer of nature, who repackaged his observations to form imagined landscapes which he imbued with a deeper meaning. The exact reproduction of a Swiss Alpine view in ‘Landscape with Mountain Lake, Morning’ was never Friedrich’s objective.

The painting represents earthly life in the foreground, in the form of the cows, the figure and the trees, down to every blade of grass and flower. The viewer’s eye then moves through to the transitional space of the middle ground, before encountering the majestic mountains in the background, representative of the divine. Just as the tiny figure contemplates the vastness and his place in the world, Friedrich invites us to do the same.
