‘The Engagement Ring’ by John William Godward was painted in 1888, a year after the artist made his debut at the Royal Academy, when he was making his first tentative steps towards independence from his parents. Archaeological details such as the marble herm of the poet Homer and the vase painted with an acrobat were based on examples in the British Museum.
