“is it mostly upper body strength?” is one of the questions I get asked most often about aerial silks. the answer is that it takes strength and body awareness in every. single. part. of your body. sure you need upper body strength to lift yourself into the apparatus, but without grip strength to keep yourself safely in the apparatus, or core strength to get your legs over your head, or stability to stand on strong legs/feet/toes on a slippery silk, you’d have nothing. think of it like ballet. if a ballerina had saggy arms or legs or feet that were unengaged, the whole performance would look sloppy and amateur. similarly, aerial looks best when there is intention in every part of you, down to your last finger and toe. every. muscle. should be engaged and intentional at some point in the performance. that’s why my supplemental training includes LITERALLY anything I can fit in. strength training. cardio. boxing. barre. pilates. HIIT. jump rope. all of it. it all helps.
