Photos by @nicholesobecki | Training in Iten, Kenya, begins at 6:00 a.m. each morning, when the lack of visibility and uneven footing helps ensure that the run develops slowly, allowing the athletes to increase their speed as the sun rises. This gradual increase of pace is known as a progression run, a specific training methodology that forces the body to increase its effort as the run unfolds. It also allows runners of different abilities and gender to begin training sessions together. To me this moment spoke both of perseverance and the role that a community can play in pushing us all beyond the limits we set for ourselves. Shot on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック for the July 2018 story on how far have we come in our never ending quest to go faster, higher, and farther. Distance running is a proud tradition here, and Kenyan men have nine of the 10 fastest times in the marathon; four of the 10 fastest women’s times were run by Kenyans. #humanperformance #teamwork #kenya #running #nicholesobecki
