This painting is the work of #JacopoTintoretto, one of the preeminent Venetian painters of the 16th century. To honor the 500th anniversary of his birth, our current exhibition “Celebrating Tintoretto: Portrait Paintings and Studio Drawings” explores an innovative and little-studied aspect of the artist’s work: small-scale, informal portrait heads characterized by immediacy, intense observation, and startling modernity.
