Today’s planned landing of @NASA’s InSight spacecraft on #Mars brings to mind Jim Shaw’s “Martian Portraits,” currently on view in “Everything Is Connected: Art & Conspiracy” at The @MetBreuer. Inspired by the amusingly clumsy reportage in supermarket tabloid photography and the then-burgeoning theory that a race of lizards disguised as humans secretly ruled planet Earth, Shaw altered snapshots of his friends to create these works. After retouching the photographs with an airbrush to reveal the monsters that supposedly lurked underneath their otherwise placid features, Shaw rephotographed them to diminish the visibility of his alterations, ensuring that the portraits appeared, as he described them, “ridiculously obvious” and “overtly faked,” much like the tabloid images that prompted them. #JimShaw #MetArtandConspiracy #MetBreuer #MetModern⁣ #MarsLanding
