In August 2004, I made my first trip to Africa to cover the war between the Sudanese government and rebel forces in northwest Darfur for the New York Times. I flew into neighbouring Chad with Somini Sengupta, from where we walked into Sudan, and met up with a truckload of rebels who escorted us around the desert to witness the horrors of the war firsthand: burned villages, skeletons in the desert, and fleeing civilians. There was no formal road, and as we careered across the desert, the truck, laden with about 16 people total, broke down often and requiring lengthy repairs.
