The notion of the ‘ #sharingeconomy ’ has become prevalent in society over the last several years. Kickstarted by the main sharing economy purveyors, such as @Airbnb , @Uber , @Lyft , @Upwork , and Fiverr, it’s become quite clear that the sharing economy will have a lasting role in the global economy. With the rise of these platforms came the birth of an ideological shift in the way we view work as more and more people crave the freedom that comes with a remote or freelance job, as well as the ability to create your own schedule and enjoy a more flexible work environment. Enter the sharing economy.

What Is the Sharing Economy?
If you’ve ever hailed a ride from an Uber, or Lyft or spent the night in an Airbnb, you’ve indirectly become a part of the sharing economy! Also known as the gig economy, peer to peer or platform economy, the World Economic Forum defines it as the “focus on the sharing of underutilised assets, monetised or not, in ways that improve efficiency, sustainability and community.”

In the sharing economy, the mediation is done by companies who leverage the power of their wide-reaching digital platforms (i.e., Uber, Upwork, Instacart, Etsy, etc.), while the freelancers are the ones who go out and perform the gigs, hence the term ‘gig economy.’
