Our New Casa Vogue Issue ?
‘Racconti di Giudecca’ by Spencer Murphy @mrspencermurphy ? The Stucky is now a luxury hotel. The history of the Stucky family is both grand and sad. The first of them, Hans, arrived in Habsburgian Venice in 1841, from Münsingen, near Bern. He was tired of being part of a family of gunsmiths and wanted to become a miller, so he started a business. His son, Giovanni, became the richest man in Venice, and in 1884 built a mill on the water where over a thousand people worked, producing 2,500 quintals of flour a day. However, Giovanni died on May 21, 1910. He went to take the train to Santa Lucia when a chap named Bruniera, a former porter at the mill, informed himself of the timetables, waited for Mr. Stucky, came up behind him, and slit his throat with a razor. Then came Giancarlo, the third generation. First there was the war, then his ineligibility for reparations from the Italian State because he was still a Swiss citizen, competition grew, then came the crash of 1929 and the sudden refusal of friends like Giuseppe Volpi and Vittorio Cini, the great Venetian landowners, to extend him further credit, all of which ended in suicide.
