Our New Casa Vogue Issue ?
‘Racconti di Giudecca’ by Spencer Murphy @mrspencermurphy ? This picture represents the garden outside Palazzo Fortuny. Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo was a young Spanish painter, poor and fascinating; he had hired a room in the center of Venice, at Palazzo Pesaro Orfei. Today, that building bears his name, Palazzo Fortuny, and is perhaps the most beautiful and unusual Venetian exhibition venue. When Fortuny lived there, however, it was a suburb; in the poverty of the 19th century, that majestic building was home to hundreds of poor people who had gutted it, filling the halls with partition walls for shabby, overcrowded one-room dwellings. Fortuny bought it, then brought it back to its former glory piece by piece as his business grew. Not thanks to his painting, but to his fabrics, which all the divas wore, Isadora Duncan and Eleonora Duse, the foremost dancer and actress of the age, respectively. The textile factory was there, too, but has since moved to the Giudecca, and the atelier known for its infinite colors is still there, with an inscription you can see from the ‘fondamenta’.
