Tonight I had the privilege of sitting in a packed auditorium & cheering for my friend @CelesteBarber, celebrating the release of her new book, Challenge Accepted. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Tonight an audience member asked her why she started her Instagram parodies, & the way Celeste answered was beyond eloquent and inspiring. I wish you all could have been there to hear it first hand, I wanted to share the essence of it because I think it so important – pardon my paraphrasing of her words. Her message was that the art that was once crafted exclusively in the likes of editorial in fashion magazines, beautiful, often crazy, outrageous, styled, provoking images created by teams of art directors, stylists, artists & models for decades, the essence of which is an escapism through art, all of instant found it’s way onto Instagram. These artistic shoots that would appear in the glossy monthly pages were the exception, but suddenly had became the rule. Content being posted daily by Instagram users made to look like it might be real life. It was not real, it was painstakingly styled, edited, created, and posed, with accompanying captions that might suggest a ‘candid’ nature of the shot, these hundreds of images would find their way into our subconscious every day, or at 3am when we couldn’t sleep and found ourselves scrolling on our phones, all of a sudden became the framework of which we compared our own selves & lives to, our gauge of how we felt about our bodies, how we rated as a woman / mothers / wife – the list goes on. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Celeste wanted to use her true love of comedy to bring to light this time in society. A digital culture that had seemingly lost touch with what was real and what wasn’t. Her work brings much needed light - and most powerfully, laughter - to this issue. ⠀ ⠀ Congratulations on your memoir, CB… Thank you for all that you do in this world. Your incredible humour & gift of storytelling is matched by your kindness, empathy, & true desire of taking action to evoke change, empowering women with honesty and authenticity. It is such an honour to witness, & to bask in your stardust. (Your ACTUAL stardust, & the holograms from your fancy Tom Ford jacket ;) Adore you-SWx
