Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. In Kazakhstans capital Astana, the alabaster white pillar known as the Kazakh Eli is dedicated to the country’s independence and the continuation of its people. The monolith is a beacon for visitors, like these ethnic Kazakhs from the southern city of Taraz.
It soars above the National University of Arts and the Palace of Independence. The monument’s base is surrounded by four bronze base-reliefs representing President Nazarbayev and the people of Kazakhstan, Creativeness, Bravery and Future. Standing 91 meters tall, the pillar’s height signifies Kazakhstan’s independence in 1991, and is topped with the golden image of the mythological Kazakh bird Samruk.
