by @babaktafreshi, The World at Night project I have been a night photographer and science journalist for 2 decades. My work and study were often related to lights at night and the effects on environment. Light pollution is a real global concern and not just an astronomer's issue. Please be concerned about the growing number of intensely bright white-blue LEDs around you. The long-term health effect of these is a serious matter. When you are heavily exposed, it disturbs sleep cycle and contributes to memory loss and the increasing rate of breast cancer. The American Medical Association officially announced this last year but the industry and communities usually react very slow after many millions of people are already affected. There are safer LEDs to use. Many of them are available in 5000K, 4000K, 3000K and 2700K options. The first two are white-blue, the worst for streetlights and residential areas. The last two are considered warm and less problematic for human body and many other species. You might think white light is safer as it shows colors better but that's not the case as it creates bright areas and very dark shadows which is a problem for safety, also increases accidents by creating glare. It also increases stress by keeping your brain alarmed. Some cities are already reacting by changing to LEDs of 3000K or less. I will write more about this in future posts. Meanwhile learn on darksky.org and @babaktafreshi.
