At least 100 tons of sea creatures have been killed from the toxic bloom known as red tide. The bloom occurs almost annually in Florida, but its effects this year have been exceptionally devastating. Carpets of dead fish line the shore and dot the bays and countless sea turtles, dolphins, and manatees have taken their last breaths. Although scientists don’t know exactly what caused this particularly vicious red algae bloom, waste from the big sugar and big cattle industry is believed to be fuelling this cataclysmic tide.
