I'm grateful to all the audience who watched a play "The Woman Who Washes the Blue Demon's Loincloth" at the Yoyogi Noh Theater". It was a way of paying my respect to both Ango Sakaguchi's novels and this historical Noh theater. At the same time, it meant a great challenge for me to play one of Ango's works on such a serene stage. Now that all the shows were over without much trouble, l thank you all with deep emotion, and my heart is too full for words. When I was first allowed to preview the wooden stage, l was not only moved by a divine beauty of it, but was also overwhelmed by that solemn ambience. "What and how should l perform here?" Even selecting the theme wasn't an easy job at all until we luckily bumped into "the Blue Demon". However, this turned out to be a really tough challenge. While practicing the play, long monologues made me agonized. I'd rather get used to memorizing or saying long phrases, though. What's tougher or toughest this time is that: l must do it under a terrible heat wave because the stage is semi-open air with no air-conditioning. I was almost like an athelete doing hard exercise. Above all, here came a typhoon! After putting in long hours of intense practice and performance, l felt rewarded with a lot of enlightenment. And then, l found much to learn by welcoming whatever would happen to me on the stage, through the rain, wind and heat of mid summer. I have "weathered the storm" in dual meanings. l cried with tears when l said "good-bye" to the stage after the last show. I've learned a lot while on the floorboard of this Noh stage. The time will come when l return here to look back on myself or to review performing arts. Thank you so much again for watching our play, whether it rained or shined. I have a deep respect for Ango Sakaguchi and the Yoyogi Noh Theater as well. I wish l could carry on to reach a higher stage. Please continue to support "métro" as much as before.
